Mysterious sinkhole larger than tennis court appears in Chile

Experts at Chile on Tuesday are investigating the appearance of a very large drain hole, bigger than the tennis court, which has appeared near the copper mine in the Atacama Desert.

Experts are sent to examine holes, about 32 meters (104 feet) crossed and twice deeper, which appeared in the area around 800 kilometers (almost 500 miles) in northern Santiago during the weekend, geological and national mining services (serernageomin) words in a statement.

The 100 meter security perimeter has been established around the hole in the city of Tierra Amarilla, near the Alcaparrosa mine operated by the Canadian company Lundin Mining.

The company said in a statement there was no “impact on personnel, equipment or infrastructure,” and the drain hole remained stable since the detection.

As a precautionary action, “the development work in the Alcaparrosa underground mining area has been suspended temporarily,” said the company.

Director of Sernageomin David Montenegro said experts would try to determine the cause of collapse and “ensure that all steps of salvation were taken to protect the lives of workers and communities close to the site.”

Cristian Zuniga, Mayor of Tierra Amarilla Municipality from around 13,000 residents, told reporters that the drainage hole had never happened before.

“We ask that the cause is clarified: whether collapse is a product of mining activities or others,” he said.

Chile is the largest copper producer in the world, which is responsible for a quarter of a global supply
