Greenwashing is driving our descent into climate catastrophe. But we can stop it

Gondola trips are a traditional part of visiting Venice for those who are able to buy steep tourism prices, but I am a little incomparable on a recent visit and choose a different ship, but both iconic. We are here Venice, an NGO that promotes the security of the city that is very affected by countless climate disorders and man -made activities, invites me on the Greenpeace The Rainbow Warrior ship, the purpose of his visit is not totally tourism.

I have taken part in two Arctic tours with Greenpeace: one in Esperanza (now dead, not my fault!) And another in the Sun rising Arctic. I previously sailed with two crews who are now in the Rainbow Warrior, and that’s where they are still, fighting for climate justice throughout the world.

A few weeks ago, when Britain defeated not only the temperature record of all time, but Cuba, Singapore and Panama, there were still people who shouted that everything was very normal and only a sunny day. What kind of fantasy world does these people live in, and who built it for them? My trip to Venice helped me answer this question.

I do not know when I arrive, but Greenpeace activists will do protests involving moving through the Laguna City channels with traditional ships, while carrying the logo of the main European oil and gas company that uses the Greenwashing marketing technique – the marketing tries to convince us that they are friendly The environment when the opposite is true: they want to make us captivated on fossil fuels. This kills this planet. Ironically, activists announced it as the last tour of Venice, because the city was at risk of soaking because of the climate impact in the Mediterranean region, as we recently witnessed with heat waves that broke the record and forest fires raging throughout the region.

Last October, Greenpeace and 30 other organizations launched European citizens’ initiatives calling for new laws that prohibit fossil fuel advertisements and sponsors in the EU, similar to what happened to tobacco at the beginning of this century. If the petition collects one million signatures a year, the European Commission must respond.

Why is law like that important? Now, with widespread public support for climate actions and scientific communities without conditions referring to the fossil fuel industry which is mostly responsible for the climate crisis, oil and gas companies, which for decades deliberately slowed climate actions, at the most vulnerable point . This industry holds fast to advertising and sponsors as one of the last ways to survive.

Delay and Deceptive” is a new rejection. The fossil fuel company pumps millions into green washing while making a clean zero promise and introducing a fake “solution”, to ignore the destruction for decades. They mistakenly painted themselves as allies and expanded their old business deadlines.

Rewilding, or only the grabbing of the land that is washed green? It all depends on who the benefits

Scientists are enough. For the first time, this year an inter -government panel on climate change reports exposed the strategy of being disinformed by saying: “Who dominates the debate about the media, and how open debate, varies significantly in all countries based on the strength of the material and technology of participants. The fossil fuel industry has unique access to mainstream media through advertising, forming narrative media reports and providing political influence in countries such as Australia and the US. More than 450 scientists also signed a letter calling for homework and advertising agents to stop working with fossil fuel companies and stop spreading climate disinformation. This is the first time so many scientists call the role of PR and advertising in triggering climate crisis.

Oil and gas companies buy prestige by sponsoring museums, influencing the field of knowledge by putting money to the university, and gaining popularity when their logo is associated with sports. They invest a lot in buying social licenses to continue the business as usual by creeping into our daily lives and disguising damage. We need to kick them immediately from our brain, heart, and community.

Last year, thanks to the workless grassroots work, Harvard University said he would remove its fossil fuel ownership. In England, the national portrait gallery and Scottish ballet confirmed that they would not make further sponsorship offers with Bp. Australian tennis has dropped the Santos gas company as a partner.

At the beginning of this century the EU banned tobacco advertising and sponsors after recognized they increased consumption and hiding health warnings. Now, with extraordinary scientific evidence of climate disorders and its undeniable relationship to fossil fuel companies, now is the time to prohibit fossil fuel propaganda due to deadly and criminal, and encourage us by being inevitable towards climate disasters. Activism works. Together we can tell people who are in power how we want to live, and what should change.

Supernovae and progenitors may have contributed more dust to the solar nebula than thought

A research team at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, working with a colleague from Université Paris-Saclay, has found evidence that shows Supernova and their ancestors may have contributed more dust to the sun’s nebula than previously expected. In their paper published in the journal Nature Astronomy, this group explains the survey and analysis of […]
